As Martial Artists, we, over some time, continue to train and evolve our understanding of the practice of Budo. People, will many times ask the question, “Why do you do this stuff year after year?” These questions allow you to answer them yet give time to reflect on why you are training. With subcultures of Martial Arts such as Judo and Jiu Jitsu, the lengthy debates about spelling, nomenclature, purpose, and what art students practice have been going on for years. Many people go to the academy or dojo to train in what they enjoy and avoid getting caught up in the rules, spelling, and sides of the debate.
Collectively and individually, it is vital to think about these debate topics, see how knowledge inputs have changed, and define why we are training. Interestingly, practicing and studying Kendo, Aikido, and Iaido has aided me in stepping toward an enlightening feeling on my Budo journey to understand Judo and Jiu Jitsu. Through these Budos, I have had the experience of exploring. Other topics, concepts, and reflections typically not presented in Jiu Jitsu and Judo instruction have taken training and cognitive understanding toward a longer lens. Kendo, for example, has different terminologies used in everyday practice (Keiko). There have been over a dozen examples where I arrived at Judo to question if a particular term used in Kendo relates to Judo. The Japanese language has several ways to express something and bring meaning to the context. I do not mind having two Japanese words, one used in Judo and one used in Kendo, to mean close to the same thing. After all the talking, the Japanese students ask, “What is the word in English?”
A Kendo instructor that I have been enjoying studying online through Youtube is Sumi Masatake Sensei, Kendo Hanshi 8-dan. In my training in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, I have always looked to model myself after competitors similar to my size and weight. As I began to understand Martial Arts, I chose to look at what the master instructors were working towards and what critical principles of the arts they, after a lifetime of study, taught us. In many articles and videos, Sumi Sensei expresses the Japanese Budo concept of Jiri Itchi. According to Sumi Sensei (2021), although he admits to continuing to struggle with the mastery of Kendo as compared to the masters before him, it has been his understanding of Jiri Itchi which has contributed to a profound reason why he has studied Kendo. It closely means unifying reality (technique) and theory (Sato & Sato, 2022).
Pun intended having Jiri Itchi as a speaking point in the Judo or Jiu Jitsu debate does cut through the whole discussion like a shinken (real katana Japanese sword), due to successfully practicing with reality and theory Jiu Jitsu presence principles of Judo and Judo presence principles of Jiu Jitsu. With Jiri Itchi, a practitioner has a glimpse of a dual understanding and apprehension of the single coin–where one side is a study of the self-realization of Judo, and the other is the study of self-preservation of Jiu Jitsu. To have these moments, much like Sumi Sensei expresses, we must continue to struggle in our practice.
Physical demands, technical complexity, mental discipline, embracing discomfort, and other challenges are all found in Martial Arts. Nevertheless, with the positive byproducts and numerous benefits such as self-defense skills, self-confidence, stress relief, improved physical fitness, mental clarity, and a sense of community, all must come with a struggle until we find the congruence of why it is we share this journey in a personal manner and with others. Those moments come without words and define Jiri Itchi.
