In Kendo, the technique of fumikomi, also known as the Kendo stomp, is considered a fundamental technique that requires much practice to master. Karate also uses a similar technique for a low kick, known as fumikomi geri (stomping kick). Additionally, in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, this form of kicking is referred to as the “Pisão” kick. In Kendo, scoring a point requires the perfect combination of several elements, including spirit, technique, fumikomi, and zanshin. The term “Ki Ken Tai no Icchi” embodies this concept, as it brings together the mind/spirit (Ki), the sword (Ken), the body (Tai), and the unity of these elements (No Icchi).
During my Kendo training, I had some difficulty with fumikomi ashi. However, with practice and persistence, I eventually overcame this challenge, moving from not applying it to applying with my toes pointing upward incorrectly and to finally having the “oh, this is easy moment.” The person who helped me really open my eyes was the Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) instructor Uesugi Taishi Sensei, 7th dan Kendo. I wondered what was his secret teaching strategy where many focused on my foot landing flat on the ground with timing, the weight distribution of the front of my foot or the back, and other areas of technical understanding because everything happens at once during a drill or even harder against an opponent. Despite receiving help from my training partners and instructors, I struggled with the Fumikomi until Uesugi Taishi Sensei told me to “Lift knee first!” in English.
Now like understanding and see the elements of good Judo throw such as when and where to grip, breaking balance, fitting into the throw with the body, and finally executing the throw, I watch Uesugi Taishi Sensei instructing with all the element of Ki Ken Tai no Icchi. I even asked recently, ‘Where is zanshin?’ I can see in almost all of his attacks the use of Fumikomi and the lifting of the knee. There are training sessions where this technique is drilled with soccer balls, and even in line drills on the basketball court as each of us move along the line at our feet.
Practicing Kendo requires not only skill but also unwavering commitment to one’s technique. The Fumikomi tactic embodies this dedication and is central to Kendo. It is a root to commitment in the art.
