When the writer first started practicing Kendo sparring (Keiko) in class, one of the beginning movements with a training partner called Sonkyo was performed incorrectly. After lowering the body with the bamboo sword (shinai), both Kendoists (Kendokas) stand up to begin training; however, at this moment, the writer would always step back as it was a habit from years of Judo training. Therefore, this stepping-back movement initially needed to be remove, as instructors pointed it out. It must be noted that it is okay to step back during keiko, but it is not to be done after Sonkyo.
Next, the writer, after one year of training in Kendo, enjoyed defensive attacks stepping backward called the strategy Hiki Waza. Although for some time, performing hiki waza was fun, the writer would be overcome by higher-ranking students. After one kendo class, a fourth dan student named Komine told Tony that he does well when coming forward, not backwards. Komine had a very limited English ability but said, “I cannot stop when you come forward.” The writer listened and continued to handle his Kendo equipment, having the tenugui (Kendo headscarf) in his hand that was blue with a dragonfly pattern. Komine looked at the pattern and pointed to the blue dragonfly (Ao Tonbo).
Interestingly, Japan has a rich history of the dragonfly. One is because the country itself looks like a dragonfly. Two, mothers saw the dragonfly as an insect of protection because it fed on mosquitoes, protecting their children from illness. Finally, there is the story of the dragonfly in Japan.
Now, there is a little more understanding of why the Japanese use the pattern of the dragonfly. Specifically in Kendo, it is not a bad nickname to have when others call you Ao Tonbo after Keiko. To not step back and to move forward with spirit.
