Have you ever had the opportunity to learn about the traditional Japanese martial art known as Shinto Muso-Ryu Jojutsu, also referred to as Jodo? It is a Japanese Budo that specializes in the 4′ wooden staff referred to as the Jo. In Japan, it is a customary sight to witness police officers wielding a Jo. This weapon rose to prominence through the exploits of Musō Gonnosuke Katsuyoshi, the esteemed samurai founder, during the early Edo period (1603–1868). Legend has it that the Jo was first utilized in a legendary duel with Miyamoto Musashi (宮本 武蔵, 1584–1645).
In the early stages of my interaction with the Jo, I had the opportunity to receive instruction in the foundational aspects of Aikijo from Yasuo Kobayashi Sensei, an accomplished 8th Dan Aikido practitioner. Sensei Kobayashi had the unique privilege of being a direct disciple of Aikido’s founder, Morihei Ueshiba, also known as O’ Sensei as a live-in student. During my stay in Tokyo, I had the chance to closely observe the Aikijo practice, noting that it incorporates a wide array of spear movements into its curriculum. This observation led me to conclude that the influence of O’ Sensei’s proficiency in spear techniques (Sojutsu) is evident within the Aikijo framework.
Over the past two years, I have been undergoing a significant transition in my Aikido training by joining a new instructor and dojo located in downtown Tokyo. This transition has afforded me the invaluable opportunity to delve into the art of Aikido under the curriculum of Shoji Nishio Sensei’s expression of Aikido and Budo. I have had the privilege of studying the intricate nuances of Aikido under the tutelage and guidance of Ichiro Shishiya Sensei, a highly accomplished 7th Dan Aikido expert and one of Nishio Sensei’s top students.

Nishio Sensei’s approach to Japanese Budo is genuinely distinctive. With his extensive mastery in Karate, Judo, Iaido, Jojutsu, Kenjutsu, and Aikido, he possesses a rare ability to integrate various Budo disciplines into a cohesive and comprehensive practice. This has been an enriching and profoundly educational experience for me as I continue to expand my understanding and skills in Aikido, the Jo, Kendo, and Iaido.
Trying to learn Shinto Muso-Ryu Jojutsu or modern Jodo in Japan has been challenging. I have been declined by Japanese groups more than once. Therefore, I have had mini lessons from Shishiya Sensei, where he provided contrasting Jodo techniques. I also gained insights into Jodo’s 12 basic techniques while discussing the Jo with my Judo and Kendo teammates.
Below is a quick look at the Jodo:
My goal is to share what I have learned about the concept of Jo in both the Nishio Sensei’s expression and for practical use in the context of taiho jutsu (arresting technique). Stay tuned for more in-depth discussions and insights on this topic.
