Imagine dedicating yourself to training in multiple forms of Martial Arts for five days a week over many years while also working full-time and teaching beginners Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes. Despite challenges such as pain and the risk of injury, you persist and remain committed to your passion even into your mid-forties. Your determination and hard work serve as an inspiration to those around you. However, how you structure your personal sparring sessions provide to be ineffective.
In a typical Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class, the instructors confidently lead the students through a dynamic warm-up session, followed by an expertly crafted curriculum of technique instruction, and culminating in an invigorating sparring session (rolling) to put the newly learned skills into practice. In the writer’s example, working with two beginner students in a light training session starting from the bottom cross-side position (training partner lies chest-to-chest on the ground with one partner on the side) is enough to cause extreme pain and tiredness in the lower back and through the middle of the back. Why is this locally happening as it could happen to you?
When working in an administrative workplace environment for extended periods, sitting for long hours can cause tightness in the legs, muscles, quadriceps, and hamstrings. However, when transitioning to a rolling period of jiu-jitsu class by 7:00 at night, you are warmed up from the beginning of class as cooled down, and your shortened and contracted leg muscles from the workday must extend fast. This example is quite common among instructors who are often in pain. Instead of focusing on getting a massage (more on this shortly), there may be other solutions to alleviate the pain. YOU NEED TO ACTIVELY STRETCH BEFORE ENTERING THE ROLLING PERIOD OF CLASS AS AN INSTRUCTOR!
I am fortunate to have access to a company called Dr. stretch in Tokyo, which has been helping me to continue training in various martial arts such as Judo, BJJ, Luta Livre, Taiho Jutsu, Combatives, Aikido, and Kendo, among other activities. The Dr. Stretch therapies have advised me to stretch every day and have provided me with simple movements that can be done in the workplace. Starting this new year off after the Japanese holiday break has been a little challenge to get use to. Yet, the lessons learned is there needs to be a return to stretching and active stretching before sparring sessions. And maybe a less Dr. stretch visits for saving my life from all this soreness and pain!
Get ready to witness the ultimate stretching experience with Japan’s very own Dr. Stretch, also known as “The King of Stretch.” Check out this promotional video for a quick glimpse into the world of stretching and how you can benefit from it.
