With social media and other video share applications, it is easy to see Martial Arts techniques used against street thugs and fighters. The example of a viral video of a smaller Brazilian Jiu Jitsu student or instructor takedowns a bigger non-trained aggressor is often shared within the Martial Arts community and specifically the sub-culture of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Judo with the comment of thoughts? In the April 1995 issue of Masters & Styles, Carlos Machado of the famous Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Machado Brother clan mentioned that street fights and quarrels were unnecessary because Jiu Jitsu had already proved effective (Masters & Styles, April 1995).
It is a higher skillset to showcase the application of nukitsuke, understandably without a sword in one’s hand. The concept can be applied in other aspects, including how Japanese atemi strikes are applied, how a person positions him or herself, and ultimately how well you can pardon a person. Below Shoji Nishio Sensei presents the concept of Nukitsuke through the examples of Atemi, the Bokken, the Jo, and in his expression of Aiki Toho Iaido.
As skilled Martial Artists, young and old, we should provide others will the chance to improve their behavior. To give an opening is an essential strategy in negotiations between two parties. The next time you enter the gym, dojo, or academy to train in your Martial Arts, try the concept of nukitsuke. Look to other skilled students that move and act in such a way that gives an opening for their training partner.
