Before each formal Aikido lesson with Shishiya Sensei, this is the only opportunity to discuss in length Budo, Aikido, Japanese culture, stories of Nishio sensei’s philosophy, and to continue learning Aiki Toho Iaido. It must be stated that technically there are 15 katas in the whole Aiki Toho Iaido curriculum, yet there are many variations of each; moreover, I also technically can perform all of the 15 katas; however, with Shishiya Sensei’s instruction, we are still on the first two katas: Shohatto and Ukenagashi. Budo can be slow if you wish to learn the basics deeply.
Recently, Shishiya Sensei, after answering many of my “What did Nishio Sensei think of this or believe about this questions,” talked about why Nishio Sensei wore a Keikogi with a tying string and not a judo gi (doji) or aikido gi without a string. I noticed this as well and thought the Nishio sensei wore a Keikogi due to his knowledge of the sword and Iaido and maybe even personal preference in how comfortable it is to wear. In my Kendo practice, a Keikogi is standard equipment. Shishiya sensei, however, told me a different story.
The author in a Kendo keikogi holds a bokuto and stands without a dueling stance in homage to Nishio’s Sensei approach to protecting one’s centerline during the 2023 Sakura Season.
Now I do not think that there is a way to check the Yokota Air Base records after WWII if Nishio Sensei was at this Military Base with three other Aikido instructors from the Aikikai Hombu Dojo. However, Shishiya Sensei expressed that there was a demonstration that Nishio Sensei presented at Yokota Air Base in Tokyo. After the demonstration, one of the leaders asked the Japanese instructors about techniques against a knife attack. Interestingly to the story, a kitchen knife was produced as no one had any training or pocket knives on their person.
At this moment, the other Aikido instructors did not step forward to demonstrate techniques. They respectfully looked to Nishio Sensei to answer the questions about knife attacks from the Military member. During the exchange of a horizontal knife slash, the knife cut Nishio Sensei’s Aikido gi, which was naturally opened, during his irimi (entering step) while performing the counter technique. Therefore, because of this cutting incident to his Judo/Aikido gi, Nishio Sensei has worn a Keikogi with a tying string. And that is the story.
