For some time, I have needed clarification to understand questions about Striking-based Martial Arts, Grappling-based Martial Arts, and Weaponry-based Martial Arts. How I answered these questions has been endeavoring hours of physical practice and reflection. Discoveries of Japanese atemi and its use in different disciplines of Budo have improved through familiarity with applications and approach in all aspects of training. To understand striking better, having a wooden sword in my hands has allowed me to see the feedback I did not know I was looking for. As a result, this training has created byproducts that essentially reinforce the application layers in my grappling skill sets. In this jujutsu technique, it is now easier to point out striking points here, here, and here, for example, in executing a move. Where I once asked why a person would favor the practice of Kendo and not Judo due to the stress of physical altercations with suspects, I now have the experience to value what Kendo offers a practitioner with a career as a first responder.
There are always stages of learning throughout a student’s lifetime, and the starting point is different for each practitioner. Growth is measured when one steps into the dojo to begin a practice, and with time grades and ranks will come. During Budo’s short season or long training period, there will be challenges from others who have never practiced Martial Arts or, even worse, those who train in Martial Arts who wish to act as critics to ask what the purpose is. Why do you train in this Budo when it does not work? As there are many ways to apply success and available choice, we must remind those critics that many Budos allow people, thankfully, to not stand still in a false dichotomy.
